第1章 阵型还没等摆开就倒了

　　"Quite a social gathering."

　　"No one," said Hurstwood. "They just sent me a couple oftickets, which I can have for two dollars. Is it going to be anygood?"

　　"A quarter after five," said her companion, consulting anelegant, open-faced watch.

　　The cabby beat his horse into a sort of imitation gallop whichwas fairly fast, however. On the way Hurstwood thought what todo. Reaching the number, he hurried up the steps and did notspare the bell in waking the servant.

　　"A Gold Mine."

　　"That sounds like somebody that can act, doesn't it?" saidQuincel.

　　Hurstwood pricked up his ears. There was a note in her voicewhich vibrated keenly.

　　"Why not?" he asked softly.

　　"Well, find out. Goodness, you'll never get anything if youdon't ask. Tell them you must have forty dollars, anyhow."
