　　There was a little ache in her fancy of all he described. Herinsignificance in the presence of so much magnificence faintlyaffected her. She realised that hers was not to be a round ofpleasure, and yet there was something promising in all thematerial prospect he set forth. There was something satisfactoryin the attention of this individual with his good clothes. Shecould not help smiling as he told her of some popular actress ofwhom she reminded him. She was not silly, and yet attention ofthis sort had its weight.

　　"Yes," said he. "You come with me."

　　"Certainly," said McGarren, "I can fix that for you, George."

　　"I call about my bill," said Mr. Oeslogge.

　　Drouet imagined that he must have misunderstood his friend. Hedid not attach particular importance to the information, afterall.

　　There was an air about her which showed plainer than any wordsthat she was both weary and disappointed.

　　Money came slowly. In the course of time the crowd thinned outto a meagre handful. Fifth Avenue, save for an occasional cab orfoot passenger, was bare. Broadway was thinly peopled withpedestrians. Only now and then a stranger passing noticed thesmall group, handed out a coin, and went away, unheeding.

　　Carrie looked at him curiously. She hardly knew how to continuethe inquiry.

　　She wondered what could induce him to go alone. There wassomething back of this. She rummaged her brain for a reason.
