In the city, at that time, there were a number of charitiessimilar in nature to that of the captain's, which Hurstwood nowpatronised in a like unfortunate way. One was a convent mission-house of the Sisters of Mercy in Fifteenth Street--a row of redbrick family dwellings, before the door of which hung a plainwooden contribution box, on which was painted the statement thatevery noon a meal was given free to all those who might apply andask for aid. This simple announcement was modest in the extreme, covering, as it did, a charity so broad. Institutions andcharities are so large and so numerous in New York that suchthings as this are not often noticed by the more comfortablysituated. But to one whose mind is upon the matter, they growexceedingly under inspection. Unless one were looking up thismatter in particular, he could have stood at Sixth Avenue andFifteenth Street for days around the noon hour and never havenoticed that out of the vast crowd that surged along that busythoroughfare there turned out,

Hurstwood at first sympathised with the demands of these men--indeed, it is a question whether he did not always sympathisewith them to the end, belie him as his actions might. Readingnearly all the news, he was attracted first by the scare-headswith which the trouble was noted in the "World." He read itfully--the names of the seven companies involved, the number ofmen.

  "Yes," she answered.

Minnie was no companion for her sister--she was too old. Herthoughts were staid and solemnly adapted to a condition. IfHanson had any pleasant thoughts or happy feelings he concealedthem. He seemed to do all his mental operations without the aidof physical expression. He was as still as a deserted chamber.Carrie, on the other hand, had the blood of youth and someimagination. Her day of love and the mysteries of courtship werestill ahead. She could think of things she would like to do, ofclothes she would like to wear, and of places she would like tovisit. These were the things upon which her mind ran, and it waslike meeting with opposition at every turn to find no one here tocall forth or respond to her feelings.

She received the answer in silence and backed awkwardly out. Thepleasant nature of her reception rather astonished her. She hadexpected that it would be more difficult, that something cold andharsh would be said--she knew not what. That she had not beenput to shame and made to feel her unfortunate position, seemedremarkable.

Carrie looked at him tenderly. She could have laid her head uponhis shoulder, so delightful did it all seem."Well," she said, "I'll try and get ready then."

"What can you do back at Columbia City?" he went on, rousing bythe words in Carrie's mind a picture of the dull world she hadleft. "There isn't anything down there. Chicago's the place. You can get a nice room here and some clothes, and then you cando something."

Hurstwood was now hot and waked up. It was a great shaking upfor him, both mental and moral. He wiped his brow as he lookedaround, and then went for his clothes and dressed. Not a soundcame from Carrie; she ceased sobbing when she heard him dressing. She thought, at first, with the faintest alarm, of being leftwithout money--not of losing him, though he might be going awaypermanently. She heard him open the top of the wardrobe and takeout his hat. Then the dining-room door closed, and she knew hehad gone.

  "I'm not mad," he answered.
